Chilika Lake is one of those places that rewires your sense of what Odisha is. Stretching across 1,100 sq km across Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam districts, this UNESCO Ramsar Wetland is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon — and one of the most biodiverse aquatic ecosystems on the planet.
It's the home of the rare Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), a bird migration highway hosting over 160 species of winter migratory birds from as far as Siberia, Mongolia, and Central Asia, and a fishing community whose relationship with the lake extends back thousands of years.

The Irrawaddy Dolphin — Chilika's Star Resident
The Irrawaddy dolphin (locally called paan macha — "blunt-nosed fish") is a critically endangered species found in only a few waterways globally. Chilika Lake hosts the world's largest population of Irrawaddy dolphins — approximately 150–170 individuals.
Unlike ocean dolphins, Irrawaddy dolphins rarely leap dramatically from the water. Instead, they surface slowly and deliberately, appearing briefly before submerging again. This makes sightings feel more intimate and less like a performance — you're watching a real wild animal going about its own business.
Where to Take a Dolphin Boat Safari
Satapada — The Prime Dolphin Spot
Satapada (about 50 km from Puri) is the most popular and reliable dolphin-spotting location on Chilika. The boat routes from Satapada pass through the Outer Channel, where the lake meets the Bay of Bengal — the entry point dolphins use from the sea. Government-approved boat operators here are reasonably priced and knowledgeable.
- Boat hire: ₹800–₹1,500 for a shared group boat; ₹2,000–₹3,000 for private
- Duration: 2–3 hours return trip
- Dolphin sighting probability: Very high (85–90%) from October to March
Barkul & Rambha — Bird-Watching Routes
Barkul (near NH-16) is the gateway to Chilika's northern sections, where winter migratory birds congregate. From November to January, the lake islands here are covered in flamingos, bar-headed geese, shovellers, pintails, and hundreds of other species. OTDC operates boats from Barkul that take visitors to the bird islands.
Rambha on the southern shore offers the most panoramic views of the lake and is a quieter, less touristed entry point.
Kalijai Island — The Temple in the Water
Most Chilika boat tours stop at Kalijai Island, home to a famous Kali temple that locals maintain with extraordinary devotion. The narrow alleys of the island lead to the temple through a forest of prayer flags and lamp offerings. The experience of being on a small boat in the middle of Asia's largest lagoon, approaching a tiny temple island, is genuinely magical.
Best Time to Visit Chilika
- November to March: Peak season — migratory birds at their maximum, weather pleasant, dolphin sightings excellent
- December to January: Bird watching peak — lakeside islands crowded with flamingos. The sunrise over the lake in January temperatures is stunning
- April to June: Off-season — fewer birds, hotter, but far fewer tourists. Dolphins still present
- July to October: Monsoon and post-monsoon — lake levels rise, water quality is high, but some boat operators suspend services during heavy rains
What to Combine with Chilika
Chilika is ideally combined with:
- Puri (60 km north): Jagannath Temple darshan + Puri beach + Chilika makes a perfect 2-day itinerary
- Mangalajodi (adjacent to Chilika): A tiny village at the lake's edge that has transformed from a poaching hub into an award-winning bird ecotourism destination. December–February mornings here are unforgettable
- Konark (via the coastal highway from Puri): A 3-day Golden Triangle Plus itinerary covering Bhubaneswar, Konark, Puri, and Chilika
Our Chilika + Puri tour packages are among our most popular trips. We handle all logistics — boat bookings, accommodation, transport, guide fees.
Responsible Tourism at Chilika
Chilika's ecosystem is fragile. A few practices make a real difference:
- Never ask your boatman to chase or get very close to dolphins — observe from a respectful distance
- Carry all plastic waste back from islands — there are no disposal facilities
- Choose licensed boat operators (check for OTDC or Forest Department approval)
- Avoid visiting during monsoon when nesting birds are most vulnerable
