Konark
The Legacy of Konark
The Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, is one of the most ambitious architectural undertakings in Indian history. Engineered as a colossal stone chariot of the Sun God Surya, it features 24 intricately carved wheels — each 3 metres in diameter and accurate enough to function as sundials — drawn by seven galloping stone horses representing the days of the week. The temple's walls are adorned with over 1,200 sculptures depicting celestial musicians, amorous couples, and mythological narratives, representing the zenith of Kalinga sculptural art. Although the main sanctum collapsed centuries ago (legends attribute it to Portuguese looters removing its magnetic lodestone), the surviving Jagamohana (audience hall) and the iconic Natya Mandapa (dance hall) remain breathtaking. Every December, the Konark Dance Festival brings India's finest classical dancers to perform against this monumental backdrop, blending living art with ancient stone.
